New year, new you – right? Resolutions are officially recorded and we’re feeling fierce as we dive into the new decade! But, tbh, when it comes to our skin, the cold weather and last few months of rush, indulgence… and more rush has left our skin in ‘meh’ shape. Dryness, inflammation and the dreaded congestion! What magical new-year wand can we wave to get our skin officially back in gear!?
Learn how to detox the skin – safely and effectively – from our skin hero, Ashley (Lead Esthetician at Shop Good!) From the best at home daily skin-detox to-do’s, to the ideal ingredients to cleanse out the bad but never strip away the good… read on as Ash breaks down her 5 favorite ways to support the skin’s detoxification process.
1. Double Cleansing for the win
Somewhere in between friendsgiving and your roarings 20’s NYE party, it’s highly likely that you may have put the most important step in any skincare routine on the backburner: washing your face (hey, no judgement here). And we’re not talking a quick once-over with a face wipe while pouring yourself a cup of your fave bedtime tea blend — we mean a deep cleanse! Throughout the day, airborne bacteria, pollution, makeup and dead cells accumulate on the surface of your skin – becoming big contributors to premature aging, pigmentation, and breakouts (um, no thanks).
Queue double cleansing! This magical practice starts with a cleansing oil, balm, or micellar water which serve to break down make-up, SPF and sebum that’s on the surface of your skin. Follow up with a deeper water-based cleanse to remove left over product, bacteria and old cells. The duo will penetrate and clean much deeper into the pores to remove any impurities, leaving you dewy and fresh-faced.
My Product Picks — 1) Start with Botnia’s Balancing Oil Cleanser and allow meadowsweet – an antioxidant powerhouse – to reduce oil production and target bacteria. The nurturing botanicals in this will target a variety of inflammatory skin issues while gently healing and soothing.Just one pump on dry skin is all you need! 2) Next up, Nuori’s Vital Foaming Cleanser. This luxuriously creamy foaming cleanser is packed with pomegranate enzymes and radish root extract to gently (and effectively) remove impurities and slough away dead skin cells – without stripping your skin.
2. More charcoal, please!
This isn’t just the latest skin craze… charcoal has been around for centuries and for good reason. Charcoal has many health and beauty benefits when used safely and properly – it’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, deeply pore cleansing, oil-balancing…need we say more? But how does it really work? Well, toxins are able to “stick” to the charcoal, which makes it a great ingredient to look for in order to get a good deep clean and overall detoxifying effect.
My Product Picks — Skin Owl’s Charcoal Beauty Bar has us screaming from the rooftops with excitement. Charcoal will draw out impurities and toxins, all while not stripping the skin of its natural oils..This gentle soap also contains 5 unique and effective essential oils: Lavender, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Tea Tree, and Peppermint, all of which calm, heal, and clarify the skin’s pores. Another must-have, Wyld Skincare’s Konjac Charcoal Sponge! This gently exfoliating sponge is made from 100% natural Konjac plant. Infused with antibacterial bamboo charcoal to purify pores while nourishing skin with vitamins and minerals, it helps promote healthy + cleansed skin with every use.
3. Masking season is here
When we’re talking about detoxing and purifying, we really need to get deep into the skin. Masking does just that – by delivering ingredients deeper and more potently to the skin than other types of applications. Plus, let’s not forget to mention that masking is *the* ultimate excuse to kick your legs up and just..relaxxx. It’s the closest thing you can get to a spa treatment at home!
My Product Pick — I can’t stop reaching for Osea’s Black Algae Flash Mask. It’s the perfect treatment for a gentle detox , combining masking + exfoliation in one. This highly active flash mask detoxes and exfoliates lackluster skin for a visibly brighter and exceptionally smooth complexion. Fig, pineapple, and pumpkin deliver enzymatic exfoliation and reduce surface impurities, while Jojoba spheres provide manual exfoliation for an almost-immediate boost of nutrients to the skin. Hematite and Organic Algae replenish moisture, while firming and visibly reduces signs of tired, sluggish skin (okay, this is exactly what we’ve been needing!).
4. You gotta flow to glow
It’s no question, the holiday’s can wreak havoc on our bodies and skin. Dehydrated air from traveling can leave our skin feeling dry and our eyes puffy. And, the sweets and adult bevy’s we consumed all contribute to a compromised lymphatic system that isn’t able to keep up with the removal of extra fluid and toxins.
This can result in increased swelling, a weakened immune system, and leaving you feeling down right sluggish. But – it can also really affect the skin by way of acne, inflammation, and more visible fine lines + wrinkles.
So, what exactly is the lymphatic system you ask? It includes a complex network of vessels, ducts, and nodes that help lymph travels through the body and remove waste. The lymphatic vessels act like a giant drainage system for the body – and for it to work optimally – needs to stay movin’ and flowin’. Stagnant lymph flow leads to waste and toxin buildup – (um, we won’t let that happen, read on!).
Unlike other systems in the body (like cardiovascular), the lymphatic system doesn’t have a built-in pump – which means it relies on *us* to keep it moving. Dry brushing, lymphatic massage, and exercise all help support healthy lymphatic flow in the skin-associated lymphatic tissue- and an help gently detox the body by stimulating the lymphatic system to remove cell waste, environmental toxins, and pathogenic organisms more efficiently.
My Product Pick — Province Apothecary’s Daily Glow Facial Dry Brush will be your new complete facial workout with transformative results. Activate your lymphatic system as part of your am routine to awaken the face and support overall skin health from within. The benefits are endless..really.
- Smooths fine line + brightens appearance
- Reduces puffiness + dark circles
- Detoxifies to help congested skin
- Tones + firms
- Gently exfoliates and sloughs off dead skin cells
… you get the point!

Our facials are dedicated to removing impurities, toxins, pollutants, and dead skin cells – in a way that’s completely bio-individual and customized to your unique skin.
Our back bar, comprised of raw and organic plant compounds, hydrosols and tinctures really is the perfect palette to work with for renewed and revitalized skin. A few of my favorite purifying and cleansing ingredients to use on my clients:
- Organic Sulfur – very anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. Great for giving your pores a good cleanse!
- Juniper – a great way to increase blood circulation in the subcutaneous layer of the skin. Healthier blood flow = healthier skin!
- Greens Compound – a blend of xxxxxx. Naturally high in Vitamin A (a.k.a a natural source of retinol) for cellular renewal, and high in vitamin K to help bring oxygen to the surface of the skin.
My Add-On Pick – For skin that needs a little support detoxing, gua sha is the perfect add-on to upgrade your next facial with. The benefits are countless – think depuffing, clearing, relieving tension, and transforming texture. This treatment will release any built up stagnation, waste and retention, all while stimulating blood flow and supporting cell turnover… See ya never toxins!
