Fall Skin Transition: 3 Product Swaps to Make Now

Fall skincare products for dry skin at Shop Good clean beauty store

Every year around late September, my treatment room fills with the same conversation. Skin that felt balanced all summer suddenly feels tight after cleansing. The moisturizer that was plenty in July is not holding by afternoon. A little flakiness shows up around the nose and cheeks, and everything just feels thirstier.

None of this means your products stopped working. It means the environment they were working in changed, and San Diego is sneaky about it. Our falls are mild, so people assume their skin will not notice. But humidity drops, Santa Ana winds arrive, indoor heat kicks on, and suddenly the air is pulling water out of your skin faster than your summer routine can replace it.

The good news: you do not need a new routine. You need three swaps, made a few weeks before your skin starts complaining. Here they are.

Swap One: Your Cleanser Gets Creamier

That fresh, foaming gel cleanser earned its place during sweaty, sunscreen-heavy summer months. But foaming formulas are built to cut through oil, and as your skin produces less of it in cooler, drier air, the same cleanser starts removing lipids your barrier actually needs. That tight, squeaky after-wash feeling is the tell.

The fall move is a cream, milk, or balm cleanser: something that dissolves the day without stripping the barrier that holds your moisture in. Your skin should feel soft and comfortable after cleansing, never tight. This one swap alone resolves a surprising amount of seasonal dryness before it starts. Swap Two: Your Moisture Gets a Second Layer

Summer skin usually wants lightweight hydration. Fall skin wants that same hydration plus something to keep it from evaporating, because dry air steals water from your skin all day through a process called transepidermal water loss.

Two ways to do it:

Upgrade the moisturizer. Move from a light lotion to a cream with richer emollients and barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids.

Or keep your moisturizer and seal it. A few drops of facial oil pressed over your moisturizer at night locks everything underneath in place. If you read our recent deep-dive on squalane, this is its moment: lightweight, non-comedogenic, and essentially identical to what your skin makes on its own. (link to squalane post)

Oily and breakout-prone readers, this applies to you too. Dehydrated skin often overproduces oil to compensate, so sealing in water at night frequently calms both the dryness and the shine.

Swap Three: Reintroduce Gentle Renewal

Here is the counterintuitive one. Fall is actually the right time to bring exfoliation and renewal back into your routine, for two reasons. First, summer leaves deposits: sun exposure triggers pigmentation that starts surfacing as light fades, and months of SPF and sweat leave skin duller than you realize. Second, with less daily UV intensity, your skin can better tolerate the ingredients that address all of that.

Gentle is the operative word. One to two nights a week of a mild acid or enzyme treatment, or a renewal serum suited to your skin, is enough. This is also the season we do our deepest corrective work in the treatment room, because your skin finally has the conditions to heal beautifully. If summer left you with new spots or texture you do not love, this is the time to book an appointment

What Stays Exactly the Same

Your SPF. Every day, all winter, no exceptions. UVA rays, the ones driving pigmentation and skin aging, are just as present in December as July, and they come through clouds and car windows. If you need a refresher on choosing one that will not fight your richer fall routine, we covered that recently too.

The Timing Trick Nobody Tells You

Make these swaps before your skin  demands them, ideally by early October in San Diego. Skin that is already dry, flaky, and reactive takes weeks to rebuild, while skin that never lost its barrier sails through the season. Prevention here is genuinely easier than repair, and it costs the same.

Not sure which swaps your specific skin needs? That is a five-minute conversation in either of our stores, or the entire point of a seasonal reset facial. Bring us your current routine and we will tell you honestly what to keep, what to swap, and what you can skip.

FAQ

How should I change my skincare routine for fall? Three swaps cover most skin: switch from foaming to cream cleansers, add a richer moisturizer or a sealing facial oil at night, and reintroduce gentle exfoliation one to two nights weekly. Keep daily SPF unchanged.

Why does my skin get dry in the fall? Falling humidity, wind, and indoor heating all accelerate transepidermal water loss, pulling moisture from your skin faster than summer products replace it. Dryness, tightness, and flaking follow unless the routine adapts.

Should you exfoliate more in fall? Fall is the ideal season to resume regular gentle exfoliation. Summer sun deposits pigmentation and dullness, and lower UV intensity means skin tolerates renewal ingredients better. Start with one to two nights per week.
