Squalane 101: The One Ingredient Every Skin Type Can Use

By Devin Jaramillo Marquez, Master Esthetician at Shop Good

Estheticians almost never get to say an ingredient works for everyone. Skin is too individual, and most actives come with a tradeoff: retinoids irritate, acids over-exfoliate, heavy oils clog. So when clients ask me if there is one ingredient I would put on any face that sits in my treatment chair, they are usually surprised that I have an answer.

It is squalane. Here is why this quiet, unglamorous oil earns a place in nearly every routine we build, and why you will find it across so many of the products on our shelves.

What Squalane Actually Is

Your skin already makes something almost identical to it. Squalene (with an e) is a lipid your body produces naturally, and it makes up a meaningful portion of your skin's own surface oil. It is part of what keeps young skin soft, flexible, and resistant to moisture loss. The catch: your natural production drops steadily starting in your twenties, which is one reason skin gradually feels drier and less cushioned over time.

Squalane (with an a) is the stable, skincare-ready version. Pure squalene oxidizes too quickly to sit in a bottle, so it is hydrogenated into squalane, which keeps all the skin benefits and none of the shelf-life problems. Because your skin recognizes it as its own, it absorbs quickly, does not sit greasy on the surface, and almost never causes reactions.

One sourcing note worth knowing: squalene was historically harvested from shark liver, and shockingly, some of the global supply still is. Every squalane product at Shop Good is plant-derived, made from sugarcane or olives. Same molecule, no sharks, dramatically more sustainable.

Squalane Benefits, In Plain Terms

It reinforces your moisture barrier. Squalane slots into your skin's lipid layer and slows transepidermal water loss, which is the technical name for your hydration evaporating into the air. Clinical testing on sugarcane-derived squalane has shown measurable reductions in water loss within weeks of daily use. In practice, skin feels cushioned instead of tight.

It moisturizes without clogging. Squalane is lightweight and non-comedogenic, which makes it that rare oil I recommend to acne-prone and congested skin. If you have been avoiding all oils because of breakouts, this is your exception. Often the breakout cycle improves once skin stops overproducing oil to compensate for dryness.

It calms reactivity. Because it mirrors what your skin already makes, squalane has essentially no learning curve. Sensitive skin, eczema-prone skin, and skin recovering from too many actives all tolerate it beautifully. I reach for it constantly in the treatment room when a client's barrier needs rebuilding.

It supports how skin ages. A strong, hydrated barrier is the foundation of skin longevity. Squalane will not replace your targeted treatments, but it makes every one of them work better by keeping the canvas healthy, plump, and calm.

It is not just for your face. Squalane shines on the body, where skin has fewer oil glands and loses moisture faster than facial skin. It also smooths frizz and adds shine to hair ends without weight.

How to Use It

- On the face: press a few drops in as the last step of your evening routine, or mix into moisturizer. Morning use works too, under SPF

- On the body: apply to damp skin straight out of the shower, when it can lock in the most water

- Layering rule: water-based products first, squalane last, since oil seals everything underneath

- With actives: squalane buffers well alongside retinoids and acids, cushioning skin against irritation

Where You Will Find It on Our Shelves

Squalane runs quietly through much of what we curate at Shop Good, from facial oils and serums to body care. Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil | Berlin Skin Carrot Seed Serum | BEIIN The All-Over Oil

It is also one of the ingredients we love enough that it appears in all three BEIIN essentials. The All-Over Oil pairs sugarcane squalane with sunflower, sesame, camellia, and apricot oils in a formula that is over 96% certified organic, and it recently won Best Clean Body Oil in Oprah Daily's Bath O-Awards. The Everything Wash and Everywhere Lotion also contain squalane, so the barrier support continues from cleanse to moisture.

And if your barrier feels genuinely wrecked, tight, flaky, reactive, nothing helping, that is worth a conversation in the treatment room rather than another product. Book a facial

FAQ

What does squalane do for skin? Squalane mimics your skin's own natural oils, reinforcing the moisture barrier, reducing water loss, and softening skin without clogging pores. It suits virtually all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone.

Is squalane good for acne-prone skin? Yes. Squalane is non-comedogenic and lightweight, making it one of the few oils estheticians recommend for breakout-prone skin.

Is squalane vegan and cruelty-free? It depends on sourcing. Some squalane still comes from shark liver. Every squalane product Shop Good carries is plant-derived from sugarcane or olives.

Can I use squalane every day? Yes, morning and night. It plays well with actives like retinoids and acids and can reduce their irritation.
