Myth: clean beauty is chemical - free.

Fact: clean beauty is about incorporating the good stuff — including a blend of chemicals + botanicals!

That's right! Not all “natural” ingredients are safe for the skin (we’re looking at you, undiluted apple cider vinegar)... and nope, not all chemicals are harmful! To arm you with info (so you can make empowered decisions about your skin and body!) we’re breaking down a few of the supportive chemicals we love to see on our labels.

CHEMICAL HEROES

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) / Tata Harper 'Radiance Mask' - These non-gritty compounds help to accelerate the skin’s natural exfoliation process + help fight acne-causing bacteria. AHA’s (like glycolic, malic + lactic acids) are ideal for stimulating collagen + reducing signs of aging. Try this mask for a glow-inducing exfoliation treatment for even the most sensitive of skin. If you’re new to incorporating acids, be sure to start slow as over application may sensitize skin.

Caffeine (C8H10N4O2) / Agent Nateur 'Holi(Glow) Eye Serum' - Ahhhh caffeine — we love to indulge in it with our morning bevvys...and also by incorporating it in our skin routine! This chemical constricts the blood vessels resulting in reduced inflammation + puffiness. It can also support brightening, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and firming the skin! Hellooo to rested under-eyes.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 or C59H90O4) / RMS ‘Kakadu Evening Beauty Elixir’AKA the fountain of youth! This naturally occurring coenzyme is responsible for our skin’s inherent regeneration + repair processes. As we age, our body slows the production of this powerful antioxidant making our skin more susceptible to stress and damage. The good news? Products with this ingredient help with graceful aging for fresh + rejuvenated skin.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) / Josh Rosebrook 'Nutrient Day Cream'One of our very favorite chemicals, zinc oxide, provides powerful protection from the sun’s UV rays… helping prevent sun damage + signs of premature aging before they start! It has also been shown to support acne as it fights irritation + inflammation while giving antibacterial properties. Double yes please

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) / Ilia Beauty ‘Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask' - A sugar molecule naturally found in the skin, HA helps bind water to collagen resulting in a plumper, dewier + more hydrated complexion. We naturally begin to lose HA as we age + with factors like harsh weather and disruption to the skin’s natural moisture barrier. But never fear! Topically applying HA can help replenish its powerful effects. Try this lip mask for extra pouty, bouncy and smooth lips!
