HAPPY APRIL, SG FAM. LEAH, HERE!
The personal care industry has a plastic problem.
Although we love to trial, collect and obsess over our beauty and skincare arsenal of top-shelf faves… our sincere passion for taking care of our skin + bodies doesn't reverse the millions of waste byproducts that end up in our oceans and clog our landfills.
The stats are staggering. With the (growing) global beauty industry producing over 120 billion units of packaging per year, personal care products account for 1/3 of all landfill and microplastic waste due to their multi-component product packaging and lack of micro-sorting at local recycling facilities. According to Harvard University,14 million tons of microplastics sit atop our ocean floors. Cue: pollution contamination, millions of acres of forests lost and multiple health threats to humans, animals and the environment, to name juuuust a few.
It’s hard to wrap our heads around this and leaves us feeling pretty puzzled as to what we can actually do. Is there a way to consciously consume? How can we prioritize self care and champion sustainability?
As a purveyor of beauty and skincare products, Shop Good has aresponsibility to provide answers to these questions, to push for innovation and support brands who are working to be part of the solution via sustainable sourcing, packaging and building environmentally-supportive + equitable business models.
Yes, moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle and consumption pattern can feel intimidating and even inconvenient. But if we continue to learn, stay curious and work together, we can collectively make a positive impact on our wellbeing, protecting our planet’s biodiversity, improving the health of marginalized communities and looking after the
future of our planet.It’s. All. Connected!
So, let’s talk ‘sustainability’ all month long and champion the changes we can make, together.Welcome to ‘Sustainable Beauty’ and April at Shop Good!
This month, we’ll celebrate our ‘eco-pioneers’ - the beauty brands operatingwith you and our planet’s future in mind . We’ll chat: how to swap out for refillable makeup (and snag that dewy summer look, too), how to recycle your empty skincare bottles properly, and we’ll even break down terms like ‘zero waste’, ‘climate neutral’, ‘ethical’. We’ll also be announcing a new initiative, building upon Shop Good’s work to reduce our own footprint.
While the beauty + skincare industry has a long way to go in creating meaningful change... the more we know, the more we can advocate for brands and businesses that are striving to do better. So let’s celebrate 'SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY ' and kick off April at Shop Good!
Love,
Leah
