A Natural Recipe to Dissolve Summer Bug Bites

gcf summer bug

Summer means:

  1. More iced coffees
  2. Seasonal fruit that tastes like candy
  3. Lighter-weight foundation
  4. More spiders, ants, bees and mosquitos in the sun… and in the house.

Whether you fell asleep on the park blanket or adventure into humid air on vacation, bug bites are a total buzzkill! (See what we did there?)

Beauty ingredients as functional medicine is the name of the game — and, as always, we’ve got a remedy for aches, pains, moods… and bug bites, of course!

Full disclosure here – we battled a nasty spider bite just this week – and decided to try combining a few remedies into one. We were so inspired by this 100% effective quick fix, we just couldn’t wait any longer to share!

No need to get too crafty for this bug bite spell.  The following are common household ingredients that when combined in just a minute or two, they harmonize to detoxify, soothe and de-flame.

  • Activated Charcoal: it’s absorption quality draws out and neutralizes toxins and poisons and it’s just as effective on the skin’s surface as it is taken orally.  (Could be why we love using it in the shower, too).
  • Lavender Oil: works as a calming and soothing agent. It’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and is known to stop bleeding, too.  This essential oil even works to repel and prevent bug bites in the first place.
  • Salt: used for over 2,000 years to clean wounds and promote healing. When applied to wounds on the skin, it can neutralize the pH levels and ward off bacteria, thus, reducing inflammation and promoting quick recovery.

DO THIS:

  1. Clean the site of the assault (aka bite) with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
  2. Open 1 capsule of activated charcoal and tap it’s contents into a small glass bowl.
  3. Add 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil and a small pinch of sea salt (iodized salt will work too, but we prefer the health benefits of the pink stuff.)
  4. Mix well and apply the paste on your bug bite in a thin but full-coverage layer.
  5. Cover with a bandaid and let the healing commence!

Ah, finally a natural way to skip the lingering itching, burning, scarring and the weeks-long avoidance of your new jean short cut-offs. Summer only lasts so long, babe!
