We are exploring ultimate gut health and happiness this month, and part of this voyage includes basking in the vitamins, supplements and natural goodies that can help our flora flourish. Enter, magnesium. Whether we need to take a yogi-style big breath and calm down, dealing with menstrual cramps, or soothing the aftermath of an overly-abundant meal, we turn to this mineral.
Magnesium is found in every tissue of our body, and is a cofactor in over 300 enzymes. This is just the tip of the iceberg to illustrate its importance. With proper levels, this mineral can aid in insulin sensitivity, energy, reducing anxiety, metabolism, a strong REM cycle, detoxification and heart health. Unfortunately, research has shown that up to 60% of us have a deficiency. This mineral helps fire up our neurons, provides strong muscle function and supports healthy bones.
Why is it good for the gut, you may ponder?? Most importantly, it turns down the volume on inflammation, a word we’ve peppered throughout our posts as an enemy that works against our sacred temples. The more we combat inflammation, the more streamlined our systems can perform at peak finesse. Plus, as we bestow this kind of support and body love, we are better equipped to absorb critical nutrients in our food.
For the plate, we suggest adding pumpkin seeds, seaweed, spinach, broccoli, salmon and dark chocolate (makes sense why PMS has us laser-focused on that chocolate bar!). As for supplementation, a staple in our wellness kits includes CALM Magnesium, a powder to toss in a glass of water and prepares us for restful sleep.
