IMG_20210118_120228_694

Hey there, #shopgoodgang !

Here we are a year into this pandemic and so. many. things have changed — including our skin! Face masks, dietary and exercise changes, not to mention the face masks! It’s no wonder our skin has ebbed and flowed with the times. Well, clean beauty, here at S/G we are all about that self-love from our head to our toes and to our largest organ: skin! That’s why this month we’re talking all things #skinpositive. We’re shedding the idea that our skin defines us quicker than our cells can say “turnover”! And who better than to chat all things skin positivity with us than, Constanza Concha (@skinnoshame) — a skin positivity and OCD awareness advocate.

Constanza began recording her experience with acne on Instagram and has been a huge role model for empowerment, self acceptance, and stepping into your own definition of beauty. Dive into her interview below and give her a follow!

SG: Could you tell us a bit about yourself + your journey to self love and advocacy for OCD awareness + skin representation?

CONSTANZA: I started my Instagram account after years of getting treatments done and taking several pills. I just wanted to document my journey like the other girls who were doing the same before me but it led people getting more and more interested in the stories of this [skin positivity] movement…I truly believe it was because we are afraid of talking about things we get rejected for, so seeing someone speaking out first, leads to other people do the same…and proudly!

SG: You speak often about finding your voice and stepping into your own power (which we LOVE!) — what has that journey looked like for you and what is a piece of advice you would give to someone else who is still learning to speak loudly for themselves?

CONSTANZA: You can’t expect to love yourself every single day. Don’t force yourself to feel happy if you aren’t feeling happiness. Expressing what you feel, but knowing that you will be always be by your side, is healthier than forcing yourself to be happy…which is something I’ve learned after years. No te hagas sentir feliz si no sientes felicidad.

SG: What is your biggest pet peeve with the skincare industry/what would you love to see changed in the future?

CONSTANZA: Anything that says “anti-wrinkles”, “anti-aging”, etc. It is extremely misleading because you can’t humanly prevent them, but only improve the look of them (literally the wrong use of terminology in skincare). Also, I would love to change the misogyny in the skincare industry; boys, girls and non-binary people can take care of their bodies too and they shouldn’t be criticized about that.

SG: This month at Shop Good, we’re talking about #skinpositive — how do you define skin positivity? Could you share a bit about your personal journey towards skin positivity?

CONSTANZA: Skin positivity is a movement created for people, who have felt trapped in their own skin, to stop the negative connotation skin conditions have in society. Skin positivity to me, appeared because of my lack of awareness regarding why I was rejected because of my skin. Which later made me understand that it was all caused by negative stigmas around me and that after changing my mindset, I will be able to change the way I was seen by others.

SG: Do you have any self care practices or mantras that help you through hard skin/mental health days that you would recommend to others?

CONSTANZA: I often get anxiety attacks so what I do to calm down my mind is stay still and breathe! I’m not sure if I’m meditating in some way since I don’t focus on my thoughts, I just relax myself! But I am doing yoga, and meditation works amazingly for relaxing the mind and body.

SG: You said in an Instagram caption once that “Living happily in your body is not brave.” and that statement resonated so hard with me! What is a stigma surrounding skin conditions that you wish would go away?

CONSTANZA: “That people with any skin condition should be entirely focused on their skin while feeling bad every single day about it”…we are humans, we can be happy even though people tell us they wouldn’t be [happy] if they had our skin. The way people feel about your skin shouldn’t affect the way you feel about yourself.

SG: While beauty has (thankfully!!) become much more diverse with the rise of social media, there are still so many beauty standards we’re pushed to conform to: shaving body hair, having pore-less skin, etc. — What are 3 things you would tell someone struggling with the push for unattainable beauty standards?

CONSTANZA: That if you keep pursuing something unrealistic, you will never feel enough with yourself even after you’ve accomplished what you “wanted”. Have peace within your own body first before wanting to change it because you don’t feel good in it. Improve your body because you are feeling happy, not because you hate it.

SG: Who is someone that inspires you? / ¿Quién es alguien que te inspira?

CONSTANZA: My mom! She taught me everything I apply on me to improve my life and mindset. I never felt alone in my body because she always took care of me and made me only listen to myself first before anyone else first! I want to keep teaching to others what my mother taught me.

SG: Just for fun, what’s your go-to morning beverage or something that makes you excited to start the day?

CONSTANZA: Drinking chicha criolla! It’s a Venezuelan rice-based cold and sweet beverage which actives me in a sec and puts me in a good mood. I’m even lactose intolerant but I CAN’T live without it!
