Do It For The Collagen

If we’re being real, we’ve been on the collagen train for quite a bit now. Can ya blame us? Clinical studies have shown the direct link between regular consumption of high-quality collagen and thicker and stronger skin, hair, nails and the likes. But… is it all hype? Today, we’re breaking down the collagen craze and why it really is the #SKINFORALL supplement that should be part of everyone’s wellness routine, no matter your skin goals or concerns!

Let’s talk science…

Our favorite wellness guru Dr. Josh Axe touts collagen as “the most abundant protein in our bodies” (there are actually 28 different types) – and its “benefits are so striking because it helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells,” healing leaky gut, boosting metabolism, and even helping improve liver + cardiovascular health. The word collagen actually comes from the Greek word kolla, which literally means glue – and honestly, it really is the ‘glue’ that helps hold the body together!

The not-so-exciting-facts…

Our bodies produce collagen naturally and in abundance when we’re young –  but production declines starting in our mid-to-late 20’s. This collagen decrease continues dramatically after age 30, as our skin begins to drop by 1-2% each year – which also helps explain why we experience visible signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin, and other symptoms like joint pain. But, we’re a big proponent of supplementing with collagen for much more than simply providing a little help in the aging department.

Keep reading for the good stuff…

COLLAGEN FOR ELASTICITY – Collagen can help improve skin’s elasticity, which refers to the skin’s ability to stretch and bounce back. Skin with a ‘high degree’ of elasticity, is efficient at dealing with daily stressors + wakes up looking healthy and refreshed!

COLLAGEN FOR ACNE – Collagen is a very necessary component when it comes to healing wounds – and the same applies to healing from acne. Swelling, redness and inflammation are all the tell-tale signs of this dreaded skin condition… and that damaged skin requires (you guessed it) a little collagen to heal quicker and without scarring. Plus, a few amino acids found in high-quality collagen supplements also provide anti-inflammatory benefits for a double win! (Pssst, because of this, collagen is also great for healing from eczema outbreaks!)

COLLAGEN FOR DRY SKIN – we’re no strangers to dehydrated skin in sunny SoCal (which is also another reason as to why Botnia’s Hydrating Serum is never NOT in our skincare lineup). Turns out, collagen can also help improve our skin’s hydration levels from the inside out as well!

Okay… so you’re officially down to add collagen to your routine – yes to the glow-inducing and skin-clearing benefits? We’re with you! Wondering where to start? Make an informed decision about which type is best for you – and always ensure you’re choosing a high-quality option without sneaky added ingredients!
