Stop Your Next Headache Dead in its Tracks, Naturally

As we are finally settling into the new year and looking to crush our goals, there is one thing us busy mamas, boss babes and badasses just don’t have the time for. Headaches!

We all know how debilitating and frustrating a headache can be. Whats more? Grabbing for the over-the-counter pain meds like Tylenol or Advil over and over, and over again may not sit well with us natural beauties. But, is there something else that can actually provide relief? Is there a natural remedy that actually works?!

Let’s first make sure your armed with the facts.

NSAID’s are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and are one of the most commonly used pain relievers today. This term includes household names like Advil, Motrin Aleve and Ibuprofen. Studies all agree that prolonged use of these over-the-counter pain relievers, (or an overdose of them) can cause serious liver damage, gastrointestinal issues, increase in heart failure and allergic reactions.

Then there’s Acetaminophen (the key active ingredient in Tylenol). It can be toxic even at recommended doses when taken daily for just a couple of weeks, according to a study by the University of Pennsylvania. In fact, in 2014, the FDA lowered the recommended amount of Acetaminophen to 325mg. (But how many times are we grabbing for the “Extra Strength” version or want to pop 2 at a time?)

Finally, can we talk about the common ingredient list, which frequently include dyes and metals that we would prefer to leave off our dinner plate.  Exhibit A (Advil Gel Caps): Colloidal silicon dioxide, cornstarch, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C red No. 40, FD&C yellow No. 6, sodium lauryl sulfate, stearic acid, synthetic iron oxides, titanium dioxide and more.

So, what can we do to lessen our natural inclination to grab for these traditional life-savers and quell our headaches in a more nurturing way to be able to take on our day?

Sharing our favorite non-toxic headache remedies with you right now:

Add Magnesium:

Those who suffer from serious headaches, like migraines, often have low levels of magnesium. Several studies suggest that optimal magnesium levels may also help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Because magnesium is involved in neurotransmitter function and blood circulation, magnesium can help control migraine headache pain by releasing pain-reducing hormones and reducing constriction of the blood vessels that raise blood pressure. Our fav form of magnesium? Our obsession with Natural Calm is no secret. It’s the most absorbent form of magnesium on the market we’ve found.

Healing Meditation:

Often times, stress plays a big role in how we feel physically and mentally and stress can easily trigger headaches for some. To combat this, try a super quick healing meditation — even 5 minutes can help! Meditation is a proven stress and inflammation reliever and has been used for literally thousands of years to improve mood and overall well-being. The next time you feel the tinge of a headache coming on, search for “healing meditation for headaches” on YouTube and simply choose the one that speaks to you the most. To save even more time, you can even save off a playlist of meditations you love in your YouTube account for free.

Essential Oils:

A quick and reliable remedy for aches and pains – what could be better? Apply peppermint and Lavender essential oil to your temples, the base of your neck and behind your ears. Peppermint oil has a long-lasting cooling effect on the skin and stimulates blood flow in the area of which it applied topically. Lavender is commonly used as a sedative, mood stabilizer, has incredible calming benefits and research has shown it;s safe and effective for treating headaches and migraines. After applying the oils, cup your hands together and take a few deep breaths. You can also add these oils into a diffuser to get these benefits aromatically!

Boswellia

A more unknown herb, but incredibly effective. If you suffer from cluster headaches, or aches behind the eyes, you’ll want Boswellia in your arsenal. Boswellia, or more commonly known as Indian Frankincense, is an Ayurvedic herb that can be an extremely effective painkiller due to its incredible anti-inflammatory properties. We love taking Pure Encapsulations Boswellia Supplements because it’s a no brainer! Try directly swapping out your bottle of Advil for Boswellia next time the aches onset.

Massage/Reflexology:

Whether you’re able to book a facial and massage at Shop Good with Mo (book here!) or are simply doing a self-massage, the benefits for alleviating headaches can be incredible! The next time you feel a headache coming on, try some of these proven reflexology techniques from LiveStrong.
